FIVE DIVISIONS OF LAGOS UP FOR DOMESTIC TOURISM ASSESSMENT

A team of Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture officials have commenced an assessment tour of five domestic tourism potentials in the state.

The officials, led by Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Tunji Seymour, explained that the Ministry will focus on the development of domestic tourism, as well as create a database of the various tourism sites in Lagos State, for necessary action to boost tourism.

According to him, the State Government intends to use domestic tourism and hospitality as a tool to eliminate local poverty, while also attracting local and international tourists for the development of several other sites in different areas in the State.

He added that the initiative would also generate employment and increase economic growth, leading to an upgrade of infrastructure in the affected communities and provision of non-wage tourism benefits among other advantages.

Phase One of the familiarization tour, which started in Epe and Lagos Island areas of the State, would be extended to Ikorodu, Ikeja and Badagry divisions in Phases II and III respectively.

Seymour reiterated the determination of Governor Sanwo-Olu-led-administration to give a sense of belonging to all communities in the State by giving viability to the various tourism sites peculiar to each locality.

The SSA and officials of the Research and Development Arm of the Ministry were received during the visitation by the traditional rulers of the various communities visited, including the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Oba Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo; the Olu of Epe, Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale; and the Elegushi of Ikate land, Oba Saheed Elegushi.

Some of the tourism sites visited are the Old Alara's Palace founded in the 14th Century, the Igunnuko Shrine in Epe, the location of the Canon Guns used by the colonial masters and the Elegushi Beach among others.
